Clear Contact Paper – Creative Uses and Tips

What is clear contact paper?

Clear contact paper is a self-adhesive product that comes in rolls of material usually eighteen inches in width and nine feet long to a roll. The paper is durable and also water resistant making it a great way to protect items from stains and water damage. The contact paper can be used to cover cabinets to protect them or almost any surface like book covers and larger projects. For ease of use the back of the paper has a white paper backing grid to make measuring and cutting easier.

Uses

Other uses for clear contact paper can be for lining your shelves, covering your windows, especially the bathroom window and window frames to protect them from water issues. This is a great way to protect furniture in the children’s play room from spills and creative fingers. The more you think about it the more ways you will discover uses for this paper.

Some creative uses for contact paper is to make stickers out of paper shapes or photos or any object by placing the object on the sticky side of the clear contact paper and then cutting around the border of the object leaving enough extra beyond the object so that you can adhere to an any surface like a mirror, window, drawer, book cover, or even walls. You might want to cut out construction paper shapes, pictures, use glitter, foil pieces, or even fabric. The more you work with this idea the more concepts you will have. Using tiny pieces of foil wrapped around a vase makes an interesting effect or using these little creations on an appliance to give it interest.

To what surfaces will this paper adhere?

There are really not many surfaces that you will not be able to adhere to the clear contact paper including flower pots, trash cans and even picture frames. One thing to keep in mind when doing theses type of creations is that you will be using the back side of the contact paper so when you turn the object over to stick it to the surface of your choice your will be reversing the captured image. It is like looking into a mirror; the object is mirrored or reversed when it is applied to a surface. In other words, if the object is a picture you would then stick the front side of the picture to the contact paper so that when you put it on the surface you will see the front side of the picture.

Covering Windows

Using the clear paper to cover windows takes a little planning. Using the paper on widows will not only protect them but will create a level of privacy. If you use a low-tack type of clear contact paper you will be able to remove the paper easily in the future. This is a great idea if you are using the paper on rental property.

To cover window panes with clear contact paper your will first need to measure the window. The older the windows the less likely they are to be exactly square so measuring becomes critical. Write down the measurements so you don’t forget and then cut the paper using scissors or a crafting blade if you prefer.

Before adhering the contact pieces you have cut, you can decorate them if you wish by pressing patterns to the paper backing first. Before putting the the paper on the window surface it should be cleaned and allowed to dry thoroughly. To avoid leaving finger prints on the contact paper as you apply the paper to the window use a plain piece of paper to smooth out the paper on the window to be sure there are no bubbles left.
